I returned to Carmel Church this morning to begin our latest excavation. This excavation will be a little different from those I’ve reported on in the past because, for the first time since 2005, we’re opening a new pit! All the excavations I’ve reported on since starting the blog were extensions of the 2005 pit.
Of course, there is one drawback; there’s not a whole lot to report on yet. In opening a pit in a new section of the quarry we first have to remove 20 years of sediment that has washed down over the surface and find where the Calvert Formation is located. That took us more than half a day, and we’ve still only reached the top of the Calvert. If all goes well we should reach the bonebed tomorrow (which is only present in the lower part of the Calvert).
