National Earth Science Week

This week is National Earth Science Week, with National Fossil Day* this Wednesday, and Brett has organized a whole range of events at Patrick Henry Community College.

The events kicked off today with a VMNH exhibit on the Carmel Church Quarry (above), as well as a recycled art sculpture contest and the start of a week-long earth science-themed scavenger hunt (with cash prizes!). Tomorrow there will be a nature walk on the PHCC campus, and stargazing is planned for Wednesday night. Thursday night I’m presenting a public lecture on “Sinistra“. Finally, an earth science fair is scheduled for this Saturday from 9:00-3:00. At least 10 groups are scheduled to have tables, including VMNH; we’ll be doing casting demonstrations, and we’ll have examples of casts for sale and raffle. I encourage anyone in the area to come to Martinsville on Saturday, and bring plenty of cash for casts!

* Due to the federal government shutdown, the National Fossil Day website is unavailable.
