Solite Excavation: Day 20

Coelocanth whole

We had a very small crew today: Ray, Joe, and I from VMNH and science journalist Peter Brannen. Shortly after arriving to the quarry, Joe found a very nice coelacanth. The rest of the day was dry in regards to finding fossils (with the exception of the Tany. shown below). I focused on collecting the rest of the exposed insect bed (~2 cubic feet) while the guys focused on removing overburden.

Tany 3-21-15

As usual, I managed to find odd patterns in the rocks. Saturday’s weird pattern find has me wondering if it is a skin impression or just rock deformation (Mother Nature’s cruel sense of humor at play).

Fossil or no

Hopefully more to show next Saturday!
