Carmel Church Day 13

I was hoping that we would be finishing up today, but it just wasn’t to be. We successfully completed two more jackets (2010-04 and 05), but we were unable to complete the next two jackets because of all the bone … Continue reading

We’re approaching the end of our excavation, and we’re mostly making plaster jackets now. Besides making the bottom of our first jacket from a few days ago, we also made top jackets for two new ones. Here’s jacket 2010-04 just … Continue reading

Carmel Church Day 7

We continued working into the face of the pit today, gradually working back into the hillside. Our biggest holdup is that the east side of the pit (just out of view in the foreground) is much more deeply weathered than … Continue reading

Carmel Church Day 6

While we put in a full day at the site today, I don’t have a lot of pretty pictures to show off. We have uncovered a bunch of heavily weathered whale bones, that unfortunately require lengthy preparation to look like … Continue reading

Carmel Church Day 5

As our pit has expanded things have been picking up a bit. Our biggest find today (actually, a small part was exposed yesterday) was a large baleen whale lower jaw. It’s visible in the image above as the long straight … Continue reading
